The short version: Mother's Shea sells raw, unrefined and whipped shea butter from Tamale in Northern Ghana. Shoppers can order from our online store and buyers who need drums or containers can request a wholesale quote.
01Who we are
Mother's Shea Ltd — which you may also see written as Mothers Shea, Mother's Shea GH, Mothers Shea GH or Mother's Shea Ghana — is a shea butter and African black soap company based in Tamale, in Ghana's Northern Region. We started in 2014, working with a small group of cooperatives near Tamale, and now source from a network of more than 60 cooperatives of women shea harvesters.
We do two things under one roof: we export Grade A shea butter to manufacturers and brands in more than 40 countries, and we sell finished, ready-to-use shea products to people in Ghana and abroad through our online store. It is the same shea in both cases. You can read more on our story page.
02Why Northern Ghana is shea country
Shea trees (Vitellaria paradoxa) grow wild across the savannah belt of West Africa, and northern Ghana sits right in the middle of it. The trees are not planted in orchards. The nuts are gathered by hand, mostly by women, in a harvest window that opens around May and runs through the rainy season.
The nuts are then boiled, dried, crushed and roasted before the butter is extracted, either by hand-kneading with water in the traditional way or by pressing. Because shea nuts do not keep well once collected, the quality of the butter depends heavily on how quickly and carefully that first processing happens — which is why we agree terms with cooperatives before harvest rather than after. Our sustainability page explains how.
03Raw, unrefined, refined and whipped: what's the difference?
Shopping for shea butter in Ghana, you will see several words used loosely. This is what they normally mean:
- Raw / unrefined shea butter — the butter as it comes from the nuts, without bleaching or deodorising. It is ivory to yellow in colour and has a nutty, slightly smoky smell. This is what most people mean by “pure” shea butter.
- Refined shea butter — processed to make it whiter and close to odourless. It is popular with manufacturers who do not want the natural scent to show up in a finished product, but some of the natural compounds are lost.
- Whipped shea butter — usually unrefined butter that has been aerated into a soft, spreadable texture that is easier to use straight from the jar.
- Grade A — the term we use for our top quality tier, checked against a written specification on every batch.
If you want to check what you are buying, our guide on how to identify pure shea butter walks through the colour, smell and texture checks.

05Buy shea butter wholesale or in bulk
For manufacturers, cosmetic brands, soap makers and distributors, we supply Grade A unrefined shea butter in quantities from 25 kg drums up to full container loads. Every batch ships with a lab-verified specification, and our facility is certified to ISO 22000 with HACCP, Fair Trade and EU Organic credentials — see the certifications page for what each one covers.
Wholesale prices depend on grade, volume, packaging and shipping terms, so we quote each order individually. The fastest route is the quote request form, and the export services page explains how documentation and freight are handled from Tamale to your port. Full product details are on the shea butter specification page.
